8,000 Silent Disco Hires and Counting: What We’ve Learned Since 2017

Somewhere between the first booking in 2017 and the eight thousandth, a lot changes. Not just the number of headphones in the warehouse, but what you learn about running events for real people, in real venues, on real nights that don’t always go to plan. Along the way, it’s turned into one of the UK’s busiest silent disco hire companies.

How It Started

Before any of this, the plan was weddings and mobile DJing, nothing to do with silent discos at all. That changed at an event where the client had hired in silent disco equipment from someone else, and DJing it that night was enough to spot the gap: this wasn’t a niche add-on, it was its own business waiting to happen. Silent Disco Party UK started properly in 2017, and the DJ background never really left, it’s still there in how events get run today.

Nights We’ll Always Remember

Trinity College Oxford, June 2022, 1,600 headphones and a DJ running from half past three in the morning through to 6am for the summer ball. A year later, Cardiff Castle hosted Admiral’s annual company party, 2,000 headphones and a DJ for the whole night. Between them, they’re still the benchmark for what a really big event looks like, and a good part of why the equipment and the fleet have grown the way they have.

From 200 Headphones to 5,000

The very first stock purchase was 200 headphones. That number now sits at 5,000, and it grew because the bookings did, not the other way round. Every big jump in stock has come from needing it for the events already on the books, rather than betting on demand that hadn’t shown up yet.

What Guests Say Afterwards

A review that sums this up well came from someone who hosted their 60th birthday at the London Canal Museum for 65 guests, most of whom had never experienced a silent disco before. They said Gareth couldn’t have been more helpful from the first point of contact, patient, and full of options rather than a one-size-fits-all pitch. That kind of feedback matters more than any star rating on its own.

Explaining It Used to Be Half the Job

Back in 2017, most enquiries started with explaining what a silent disco was before getting anywhere near a quote. That’s changed a lot since. Between weddings, TikTok clips, cathedral events making the news, and word simply getting around, most people calling now already know roughly what they’re asking for. It’s a smaller shift than 200 headphones becoming 5,000, but it’s changed nearly every conversation along the way.

The Lesson That Changed How Deliveries Work

An early lesson didn’t come from a great night. Using the wrong courier, one without proper tracking or reliable timing, taught this the hard way: for an event with a fixed date, a late or lost delivery isn’t a minor inconvenience, it can be the whole event. Tracked, dated deliveries with a proper window are non-negotiable now, for our sake as much as the customer’s.

Sometimes the Best Booking Is the Last-Minute One

A school once got in touch about a Leavers Disco with barely any notice at all. Equipment went out, arrived and was collected without a hitch, and the review afterwards was as good as any booked months in advance. It’s a good reminder that being able to say yes at short notice matters just as much as anything else in this business.

Getting Through 2020

The pandemic years weren’t a good story. Events stopped almost overnight, gatherings weren’t allowed, and there wasn’t much to do but get through it. There’s no clever pivot to point to here, just a hard stretch that had to be waited out before bookings started coming back.

June and July Are When It Really Gets Busy

Summer balls, school leavers’ parties, and outdoor events all land in the same few weeks, which makes June and July the busiest stretch of the year by some distance. Planning stock and staffing around that reality, rather than assuming demand is spread evenly, has been one of the more practical lessons of the last several years.

Word of Mouth Still Beats Everything Else

Reviews, referrals, and repeat bookings from the same schools, venues, and event planners have done more for this business than any single marketing push. People book again because the last event worked, not because of anything said in an advert. Working with Cambridge University, Oxford University, Arsenal FC, and Girlguiding along the way has been as much about them coming back as about landing the booking in the first place.

What Hasn’t Changed Since 2017

The core of it is still the same as it was on booking number one: headphones, a transmitter, and a room full of people having a genuinely different kind of night. Everything else, the warehouse, the fleet, the reviews, has grown around that one simple idea rather than replaced it.
