How a School Silent Disco Works

At a school silent disco, every pupil wears a wireless LED headphone tuned to one of three music channels. They choose what they dance to, change channel when they want, control their own volume, and the hall itself stays at conversation volume.

Pupils can sing, dance, sit, run around or have group dance-offs - whatever they want, with 120 metres of wireless range. Meanwhile teachers can talk without shouting, neighbouring classrooms aren't disturbed, pupils with sensory needs can take a quiet break without leaving the room, and your event runs as long as the timetable allows.

Eight Ways Schools Use Silent Disco Equipment

It's not just discos. Schools hire us for fundraisers, language exams, sensory sessions, residentials and more. Here are the eight most common.

1. School Discos & End-of-Term Parties

The classic use case. Christmas, end-of-term, leavers parties or summer fairs - works brilliantly anywhere on the school site, for any year group, any time of year. Three channels of music mean every pupil finds something they want to dance to.

2. PTA Fundraising Ideas That Work

Looking for unusual PTA events or fresh PTA fundraising ideas that actually make money? Silent discos are one of the highest-profit-per-hour events a PTA can run. Charge £5 per ticket, add a raffle and you'll raise hundreds in a single evening.

3. School Rewards Day Hire

Hit your termly reading target, behaviour goal or charity challenge? A silent disco afternoon is a reward pupils actually remember, with no speaker setup and no noise bleeding into neighbouring classrooms.

4. Year 6 Leavers & Year 11 Proms

Leavers parties are our biggest summer term market. The LED headphones glow red, green and blue across the dancefloor as pupils choose their channel - creating a proper club atmosphere for Year 6, Year 11 leavers' balls and sixth form proms.

5. SEN & Sensory-Friendly Events

The hall stays quiet. Pupils set their own volume or lift a headphone off at any time. Widely used in special schools, SEN units, and mainstream schools running inclusive events for pupils with sensory needs. Pupils who'd usually need to leave the room can stay - and often join in dancing for the first time.

6. Foreign Language Listening Exams

Schools use our kit for GCSE and A-Level foreign language listening exams. The three channels can broadcast a different language simultaneously - so French, Spanish and German exam papers can all run in the same hall at once, with every student hearing their own audio with no interference between groups.

7. EAL, MFL & International Student Events

Day-to-day language learning, EAL group activities and international student social events all benefit from the three-channel setup. We're a regular supplier to EF Language Schools hosting international students from multiple countries.

8. School Residentials, Scouts & Girlguiding

We're regular suppliers for school residentials, Scouts UK and Girlguiding camps, sleepovers and after-hours activities where noise has to be kept down and large groups need a fun social activity. Works indoors and outdoors with 120m range.

Built for Schools

Why Schools Hire Us Year After Year

After 8,000+ events since 2017, here's what we know schools care about most - and why so many rebook us year after year.

Children Get Lost in the Music

Wearing the headphones creates a kind of bubble - kids dance like nobody's watching, lost in their own little world. Teachers regularly tell us the pupils who'd usually sit at the side end up loving it most.

✓ Truly Magical Experience

Three Channels of Different Music

Three channels means three completely different songs play at the same time - chart hits, kids' classics or your school's own playlist. Pupils flick between them to find what they want to dance to. No-one's stuck listening to a song they don't like.

✓ Something for Everyone

The "Headphones Off" Moment

Every silent disco creates a moment kids talk about for weeks - that split-second when someone lifts their headphones and discovers the room is full of friends singing their hearts out to music nobody else can hear. It's why pupils ask their school to book us again.

✓ Memory-Maker

Perfect for SEN & Sensory Needs

The hall stays quiet. Children who find loud speakers overwhelming can set their own volume or remove the headphones at any time. Widely used in special schools and SEN units for exactly this reason.

✓ Inclusive · SEND Friendly

No DJ. No Outside Staff. No DBS.

Your teachers or PTA volunteers run the event - no external contractor on your premises means no DBS checks, no visitor sign-in passes, no risk assessments for outside staff. Setup takes around 15 minutes with our clear instructions.

✓ Zero Safeguarding Hassle

Works Anywhere on School Grounds

Hall, classroom, playground, or sports field - the 120-metre wireless range means you're not stuck in one room. Our equipment uses radio frequency technology, so it works in any building, on any school site, regardless of wifi signal strength.

✓ 120m Range · No Wifi Needed

One of the Best PTA Fundraisers

150 headphones cost £340 to hire. Charge £6 per child across a 150-pupil school and you're looking at around £560 profit on tickets alone - before tuck shop, raffle or refreshment income. Used by hundreds of UK PTAs and PTFAs as their go-to fundraising event.

✓ High-Profit Fundraiser

Bookings All Year Round

Not just an end-of-term thing. Schools book us throughout the year for World Book Day discos, Children's Mental Health Week, Sports Day after-parties, fundraising fairs, summer fêtes, Halloween, Christmas events and beyond.

Sample Day

A Sample School Silent Disco Schedule From Start to Finish

A step-by-step walk-through of a typical school silent disco - what happens before, during and after the event, for the pupils dancing and the teachers running it.

30 mins before
Step 1
Quick Setup, Easy Start

Plug any 3 devices - phones, laptops or tablets - into our 3 transmitters with your chosen playlists, then switch the headphones on. Setup takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on headphone quantity.

Pre-event briefing
Step 2
1-Minute Pupil Demo

A quick teacher demo to show pupils how to press the channel button to switch between three different songs playing at once, and adjust the volume dial. From here, every child controls their own silent disco experience.

First 5 minutes
Step 3
Headphones On, Party Starts

Pupils arrive, grab a headset and the silent disco starts. The room transforms instantly into a sea of red, green and blue headphones. Children dance and sing in silence - the only sound in the hall is laughter and singing voices.

After 20 minutes
Step 4
Channel-Switching at Full Speed

Pupils are flicking between songs with ease, finding their favourites across all three channels. Spontaneous singalongs break out as kids find each other on the same track - the hall self-organises into red, green and blue tribes.

Mid-event
Step 5
The Headphones-Off Moment

A pupil pulls their headphones off mid-song - the room is full of kids dancing and singing, but there's no music. Three different songs being belted out at once, and total silence underneath. The moment every pupil tells their parents about that night.

End of event
Step 6
Lights On, Pack Up

Headphones come off, hall lights go up. Pack the headphones and equipment back into the tote boxes and cable-tie them ready for return collection from school the next working day.

Silent Disco for Schools - Your Questions Answered

Quick answers to the questions teachers, PTAs and event organisers ask us most. Can't see your question? Call us on 020 8150 4168 or email [email protected]

How does a silent disco work in a school?
Each child wears a wireless LED headphone that receives music from three transmitters via radio frequency (not wifi). Pupils switch between three channels on the side of each headset. It works in any school hall, classroom, playground or sports hall with just a mains socket.
Do you need wifi or internet for the equipment?
No. Our equipment uses radio frequency, not wifi or Bluetooth. That means nothing is blocked by your school's filtering, no passwords needed, no IT department sign-off and it works perfectly in older buildings or temporary classrooms with weak signal.
How many headphones do we need for a school event?
One headphone per pupil taking part at the same time. Most schools book based on event size - 30 headphones for a single class, 60 for a year group, and 150+ for whole-school events. You can also save money by booking fewer headphones and rotating them between year groups across the day - the 10-hour battery means one set can run multiple sessions back-to-back.
Do you send a DJ or staff to the school - or do we run it ourselves?
You run it yourselves - which avoids any safeguarding or DBS concerns. Setup takes 15 to 30 minutes: plug 3 devices (phones, laptops or tablets) into our 3 transmitters, switch the headphones on, and you're ready. Every hire includes a video guide, written instructions and 24/7 phone support if you need it.
Can we use our own music or school playlists?
Yes. You can connect your own phone, laptop or tablet to each of the three transmitters and play any music or audio you want - including school-vetted playlists, curriculum audio, exam recordings or staff-pick playlists. Or use our library of clean, child-friendly playlists built for schools.
How much does it cost to hire a silent disco for a school?
Hire prices for schools start at £145 for 30 headphones (single class disco). Prices scale by quantity: 50 hp £170, 60 hp £190, 100 hp £250, 150 hp £340. All prices include VAT, DPD delivery and return collection from your school.
How long before the event should we book?
We recommend booking at least 4 weeks ahead, especially for end-of-term weeks (Christmas and summer) when dates book up fast. Short notice bookings are often possible - get in touch to check availability.
Can you invoice the school directly?
Yes. We're set up for school purchase orders and invoice payment with no booking deposit required. Mention it when booking and we'll send an invoice to your bursar or finance office with standard payment terms.
What age group is a silent disco suitable for?
Our headphones are suitable from age 4 upwards. They're fully adjustable, lightweight and padded, with individual volume control on every headphone. We supply silent disco hire for Early Years, KS1, KS2, secondary school events, sixth form proms, Scouts and Girlguiding groups across the UK.
Is a silent disco suitable for SEN pupils?
Silent discos are widely used in SEN settings. Children control their own volume, can remove headphones at any time, and the hall stays quiet which reduces sensory overload. Many special schools book us specifically for this reason.
What if a headphone stops working during the event?
Every hire includes spare headphones (typically 5 to 10% extra) at no additional cost so an event isn't disrupted. If you have a technical issue we can't solve quickly via our 24/7 phone support, you can swap in a spare straight away.
Will it disturb neighbouring classrooms or shared spaces?
No. Because all music plays through wireless headphones rather than speakers, the hall itself stays at conversation volume. Year groups in adjacent classrooms aren't disrupted, exams in nearby halls aren't affected, and shared-space schools (community halls, MAT-shared sites) can run an event without affecting other groups in the building.
Can a silent disco be used as a PTA fundraiser?
Yes - silent discos are one of the highest-profit PTA events. You'll need one headphone per child attending. A typical example: 100 headphones at £250 hire cost, charging £5 per child across a 100-pupil event, generates around £250 profit on tickets alone - before tuck shop, raffle or refreshment income.
Can silent disco headphones be used for foreign language listening exams?
Yes - schools use our kit for GCSE, A-Level and BTEC foreign language listening exams. Because there are three independent channels, you can broadcast different languages simultaneously in the same hall - for example French, Spanish and German exam papers running at the same time. Each student hears only their own audio with no interference between groups.
Do you do silent disco hire for sixth form, college or university events?
Yes - we hire to sixth forms, colleges and universities for proms, freshers' week, student union nights and balls. The process is the same as a school booking: you tell us your event date and headphone count, we deliver the kit by DPD 2-3 days ahead, and you run it yourselves. Larger packages and live DJ options are available for these events. Get a quote
Can I hire a silent disco for a kids' birthday party at home?
Yes - we have a dedicated page for kids' silent disco birthday parties, sleepovers and home/garden events with parent-friendly pricing and home delivery via DPD. See our kids' birthday party hire page
